You might be wondering what the process of returning a leased car is like when your term is up in Oakland. As it happens, it’s quite straightforward! In many cases, you can even return your car early if you’re interested in upgrading, buying out the car, or checking out a new model. The finance team at San Francisco Honda has all the details on returning a leased car, including a step-by-step outline of the process and some of your end-of-lease options.

Checklist of Items to Bring When Returning a Leased Car

When your lease is up (or if you’re returning early), all you have to do is collect some important items and bring your car to our dealership. There are some items that we can find for you if you forget or can’t find them, but it’s best if you can have them on hand yourself to make the process as smooth as possible.

  • Vehicle inspection report
  • Repair receipts
  • Keys/spare keys
  • Owner’s manual
  • Maintenance records

Guide to Returning a Leased Car

After you’ve collected the items above, simply bring your leased car by our dealership to drop it off and you’ll be all set. In fact, you can even return a car that you leased from a different Daly City dealership! Then there are a few things that we’ll take care of on our end:

  1. Bring your leased car to our dealership.
  2. A specialist will perform a full inspection of your vehicle, looking for any damage and checking its overall quality.
  3. Keep in mind that if you’ve put miles on the odometer that exceed the lease terms, you’ll be subject to penalty fees.
  4. You have a few choices once we’ve completed the inspection: upgrade to a newer model of your leased car, buy out the vehicle, or walk away in favor of something from our new or pre-owned inventory.

Returning a Leased Car Early at San Francisco Honda

The possibility of returning a leased car early varies from company to company, but you’ll find that it’s possible in many cases to end your leasing term early. Just be aware that you’re still responsible for paying the owed amount, alongside any fees you might have accrued. However, if you return a leased car early, you’ll no longer be on the hook for your monthly lease payments, and you can choose to upgrade to a newer model of your current vehicle if you want.
